Kent Erickson lays out future Novell vision during Dublin visit

Kent Erickson serves as the Global Senior Vice President and General Manager for the Workgroup Solutions business unit at Novell. He is responsible for the development of all products that make up Novell’s collaboration solutions, including Novell Open Enterprise Server, Novell GroupWise and Novell Teaming + Conferencing. Mr. Erickson visited Dublin recently and outlined to an invited group of Novell customers and partners, Novell’s strategic vision for Workgroup solutions.

There are a number of high profile Novell customers in Ireland running Groupwise today, and for these organisations Groupwise has provided a highly dependable, secure and stable email environment for many years. During his presentation Mr Erickson provided a very worthwhile insight into many of the current focus areas for Novell’s Workgroup solutions. These include expansion of Novell’s Teaming + Conferencing solutions, numerous rich services features available within Open Enterprise Server and the integration of products like SugarCRM with Groupwise.

Furthermore, Novell is executing on its plans to position these solution areas to leverage the very latest technology trends like Cloud Computing. SuSE Linux Enterprise Server – Sneak Preview

Completion of Novell’s SLES version 11 is in high gear. SLES 11 should provide some new system management capabilities and improved power management, including control groups that allow more granular handling of CPU, memory, storage and network resources.

Users should benefit from Novell’s collaboration with Microsoft to run Windows virtualized on SUSE Linux Enterprise and vice versa. Systems should deploy faster through improvements to the YaST manager and configuration framework, including the YaST partitioner and AutoYaST.

Users wanting to test SLES 11 before the official release end of March can download alpha version from Novell’s sneak preview website.

Thin Client from Dell & Novell

Novell today announced that Dell will preload the SUSE Linux Enterprise Thin Client operating system onto its new OptiPlex FX160 platform.

Novell Customer Showcase – Sesame Workshop

By implementing Novell ZENworks Asset Management, Sesame Workshop reduced inventory administration time by 70 percent and can better comply with auditing requests and leasing contracts.

The company moved its Web infrastructure to SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for a cost 85 percent less than that of a proprietary UNIX* and Windows solution. Consolidating Web servers by 80 percent with Xen virtualization has reduced hardware costs by 30 percent. By leveraging open source software, the company has dramatically reduced its software costs, contributing to an overall IT budget reduction of 18 percent.

“Without Novell solutions, we would need to increase our IT budget every year by at least $1 million,” said Broadwater. “Just as Sesame Workshop innovates in media and entertainment, we try to innovate in IT. Novell gives us the tools to compete with our bigger competitors, but without the huge price tag.”
